Mr Justice Gage told them on yesterday he was prepared to accept a majority verdict in the case after the 11 remaining jurors had deliberated for more than 20 hours.

But he said he would prefer them to reach a unanimous decision.

The judge told the jury panel: "I ask you once more please to retire and continue to try to reach a unanimous verdict, but if you cannot I will accept a majority verdict, that is a verdict on which at least 10 of you are agreed.

"You must have as much time as you need. You must not think that you are under any pressure of time at all."

The judge told the six women and five men jurors that "a respectable body of opinion says it is not lawful for a crown court to sit on a Sunday".

"So you will not be able to consider your verdict on the Sunday. It will give you a welcome break.

Yesterday morning one of the seven women jurors was discharged by the judge after suffering a family bereavement.

Barry George, (41), unemployed from Crookham Road, Fulham, south-west London, has denied murdering Miss Dando on April 26th, 1999.

The TV presenter was shot through the head in the doorway of her home in Gowan Avenue, Fulham, west London.
