An adventurer well known for his exploits of motorcycling, gliding, climbing, canoeing and parachuting, has been buried in Kilcully, Co Cork.
Joey Kerrigan (96), who was a former headmaster at what is now St John's College in Sawmill Street, is cited as being one of "Cork's legends" for his daredevil activities.
Born in Dublin, Mr Kerrigan lived much of his life in Summerhill North in Cork. He graduated from UCC with a degree in science and taught at what was then the Crawford Technical Institute.
Mr Kerrigan was the first person to ride to the top of Carrauntoohil on a motorbike; in his later years he jumped off the same mountain on a hang glider. He also climbed the Matterhorn in the 1930s and, aged 65, led a rescue unit in a caves exercise in Ovens, Co Cork.
