Date set for hearing on Corrib gas line

A two-day public hearing on the controversial Corrib gas pipeline is to be held at the end of October.

A two-day public hearing on the controversial Corrib gas pipeline is to be held at the end of October.

The Government's Corrib Technical Advisory Group is also inviting written submissions to be made to Advantica, the compnay which is reviewing the safety of the onshore pipe.

Written submissions, which can be faxed, emailed or hand-delivered to the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, will be published on the Department's website.

Five Co Mayo men have been in prison for more than 80 days for contempt of court relating to the Shell Corrib gas pipeline. The men remain in prison having failed to purge their contempt before the High Court.

The men - Micheál Ó Seighin, Vincent McGrath, Willie Corduff, Philip McGrath and James Philbin - were jailed indefinitely for obstructing work on the controversial pipeline.

Last month it emerged that Advantica, the company appointed by the Government to carry out the safety review, is a sister company of Transco, the British gas transportation company fined £15 million for causing the deaths of four members of a Scottish family in 1999 due to health and safety negligence.

Advantica was identified as the successful bidder and appointed on August 25th. The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey recently described the company as "a world leader in the development and application of advanced hazard and risk assessment technologies for gas pipelines."
