Academic research into malaria and studies of the interaction between politicians and the media have been recognised under Dublin City University's annual president's research awards.
The £2,000 awards, presented yesterday by the president of DCU, Dr Danny O'Hare, are given to mark quality research in the sciences and the humanities. The recipients are Dr John Dalton of the school of biotechnology and Dr John Horgan of the school of communications.
Dr O'Hare praised their work, describing it as being of the highest academic quality. Dr Dalton had made a significant contribution to improvements in world health through the development of vaccines for illnesses common in developing countries, he said. Dr Horgan's research had set a powerful example for his colleagues to follow, he added.
Dr Dalton is a world expert in the development of vaccines against a number of parasitic illnesses, including malaria, liver fluke and schistosomiasis.
Dr Horgan recently published a biography of Sean Lemass. He told people attending the ceremony about his research into the media and politicians, describing the difficult relationships between them after the formation of the State.
