Gardai are treating as suspicious the death of a 78year-old Galway woman whose body was found in her home on the outskirts of the city yesterday morning.
The Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, arrived at the scene last night and carried out a preliminary examination of the body of the woman. A full post-mortem is expected today.
The woman was found in a pool of blood at her home in Ballindooley, on the Head ford Road, approximately three miles from Galway city centre.
The alarm was raised after one of the woman's sons found her lying severely injured on the floor of her bungalow home, shortly before 11 a.m. It is believed she lived alone in the house.
"A son of the deceased arrived at the house this morning and found his mother in a collapsed condition," a Garda spokesman confirmed. "There was a pool of blood, and she had injuries to the body."
Another son was found lying unconscious on a couch in the house. He was transferred to University College Hospital, and gardai were last night waiting to interview him. He remained in hospital overnight.
Gardai sealed off the scene pending the arrival of the Assistant State Pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau from Dublin.
A Garda spokesman said they would be withholding the name of the woman until all relatives had been informed.
