THE DEATH has occurred of Dr Pádraic Conway, vice-president for university relations at University College Dublin, after a three-year battle with cancer.
Dr Conway, who was 50, was also director of the UCD International Centre for Newman Studies.
A trained theologian, he played a key role in organising a special one-day conference, Vatican II: 50 Years On, scheduled for UCD on Thursday.
Yesterday an article by Dr Conway on Ireland’s “ambivalent” relationship with the Second Vatican Council appeared in The Irish Times.
In a tribute, UCD president Dr Hugh Brady said he was a unique figure at the college “constantly on the move, mobile phone pressed to his ear, waving a greeting to one of his many friends, acquaintances and colleagues. Always entertaining, sometimes combative, never boring, he embodied all of the features of Belfield life, the academic, the sporting, the social and the political.
“He will be sadly missed by his many friends and colleagues”
