The September 11th attacks on the two World Trade Centre towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, together with the plane hijack which ended with a crash in rural Pennsylvania, have left 5,972 people dead or missing and presumed dead, according to the latest figures provided by federal and local officials.

At the World Trade Centre, 363 are confirmed dead, 157 dead on the two hijacked planes, including 10 hijackers and 5,219 reported missing.

At the Pentagon, 125 are dead or missing, 64 of them on the hijacked plane, including five hijackers. In Pennsylvania, 44 are confirmed dead on board the plane, including four hijackers.
