A delegation of TDs will visit jailed Socialist Party TD Mr Joe Higgins in Mountjoy Prison today.
Among the delegation will be Green Party chairman Mr Gormley who said although he did not agree with Mr Higgins's approach to the bin charges issue, he believed that the sentence handed down to him and Councillor Clare Daly was excessive.
Mr Gormley said the sentences for contempt of court handed down to the anti-bin charge protesters contrasts with the leniency with which white collar crime has been dealt with in this country. Mr Gormley said he totally rejected the suggestion Mr Higgins should be censured in the Dáil.
Mr Gormley said he also planned to visit Mr Higgins in a personal capacity next week.
"Joe Higgins has always been a good colleague. His office is next to mine in Leinster House and over the years I have got to know him and members of his family. I wish them all well at this difficult time," Mr Gormley said.
