A pregnant South African hairdresser who imported £81,000 of cannabis resin into the State has received a five-year sentence which is to be suspended provided she is deported within a month. Ellen Dingann (27), from Johannesburg, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to importing the drugs and possessing them for sale or supply on February 2nd, 2001.

Judge John O'Hagan said he was only suspending the sentence if the State could arrange the woman's deportation within a month.
