Athletics:Alistair Cragg's World Championships ended in disappointment this evening when the Irishman finished 13th in his 5,000m heat at Berlin's Olympic Stadium.
The Clonliffe Harriers runner posted a time of 13.46.34 minutes, a long way off the pace set in the first heat by Kenenisa Bekele.
The former European indoor silver medallist looked comfortable early on in a relatively slow race but dropped off with five laps to go and was out of the reckoning with three remaining.
Uganda's Moses Kipsiro ran a season's best of 13.22.98 to win the heat but was over three seconds slower than Bekele, who was closely followed by America's Matthew Tegenkamp and Britain's Mo Farah.
Thomas Chamney earlier failed to qualify from his 800m heat.
Chamney was somewhat unfortunate as any chance of advancing was undone when he tangled with Sudan's Ismail Ahmed Ismail coming off the final bend.
The Irish athlete had got into a good position after a solid start and was part of the main pack coming into the bend.
Ismail made a move which unbalanced Chamney who in turn pushed the Sudanese runner.
Ismail went on to qualify third behind the America’s Nick Symmonds, who won in a time of 1:47.12secs ahead of Belal Mansoor Ali from Brunei in second.
Chamney finished fifth in a time of 1:48.09 which was some way off his personal best 1:45.41
Hammer thrower Eileen O'Keeffe has also bowed out after falling short with her first attempt of 63.20 metres .
The Kilkenny woman, sixth in the championships two years ago, was unable to register another score on her two subsequent throws.
