Two doctors at the James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown, Dublin, have won British Council/Chevening fellowships for research into asthma, writes Dick Ahlstrom. The awards were presented in Dublin yesterday by the British ambassador, Mrs Veronica Sutherland. Dr Colm Leonard's work studied the asthmatic's response to the house dust mite. Dr Vincent Tormey's project examined how the immune system could be encouraged to prevent asthma.
Both doctors work in the department of respiratory medicine, which over the past six years has received nine international research awards. Researchers in 51 countries competed for the fellowships sponsored by GlaxoWellcome.
