The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has stepped up its efforts to prosecute tax evaders and white-collar criminals.

A principal officer and two assistant principals have been appointed to lead a special unit in the DPP's office to streamline the prosecution process for Revenue cheats.

The DPP, Mr James Hamilton, has been invited to appear before the DIRT subcommittee of the Public Accounts Committee to outline progress made in getting prosecutions for revenue offences.

The chairman of the committee, Mr Jim Mitchell, told The Irish Times that he had received a letter from the DPP confirming that three senior officials were now concentrating on white-collar crime.
