Cardinal Desmond Connell yesterday expressed concern about effects of the carers' dispute. In a brief statement he said he wanted to convey his concern about the disruption of care services for the intellectually disabled.
"In a situation like this, they cannot speak for themselves," he said. "I have on various occasions in the past expressed my great admiration for those who work in this sector. . . "
He hoped the dispute could be settled soon, "for the sake of those whose lives are at most risk of being disrupted by any strike action that is taken, the disabled themselves and their families, especially where relatives are elderly and may be incapacitated".
