Drownings in Boyne and Liffey

A 15-year-old boy drowned yesterday just outside Drogheda, Co Louth

A 15-year-old boy drowned yesterday just outside Drogheda, Co Louth. He fell into the river Boyne at Obelisk bridge, between Drogheda and Slane. It is understood he and some friends were playing with a swing made from a rope tied around a tree.

It is thought that he slipped from the rope or it broke as he was swinging over the river. The gardai and local river rescue crew were called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. and the youth's body was recovered about an hour later.

On Saturday a 13-year-old boy drowned in the Liffey at Roseberry, Newbridge, Co Kildare. The teenager, who was named as Gary Foxe, from the Newbridge area, was playing with a friend at the river. According to gardai, he went into the water to retrieve his runners and got into difficulties.
