Gardaí were today investigating a possible drugs link to the murder of a 22-year-old man in the south inner city.

Detectives believe that he may have known his killer and suggested the attack may have been as a result of a drug debt.

The man was shot as he sat in a dark coloured Honda car on Cameron Street in Kilmainham. Another man, who was with him at the time, suffered only minor injuries.

Gardai found the man lying in the car at around 1am. He was taken to St James's Hospital but died a short time later.

It is believed the pair had been socialising in a nearby bar before the gunman struck. Two men were arrested hours after the attack and taken to Kevin Street Garda station for questioning.

They are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be detained for 72 hours.

The scene of the shooting has been preserved for technical examination and a post mortem examination will be carried out later today. end
