A book of condolences for Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver will be opened today at the Mansion House in Dublin.
Lord Mayor of Dublin Emer Costello urged people to sign the book “in recognition and celebration of the wonderful, kind and inspiring life of Eunice Kennedy Shriver”.
The book of condolences will remain open in the Oak Room of the Mansion House on Dawson Street, from 10am until 6pm today and from 10am until 5pm tomorrow.
Ms Kennedy Shriver, sister of US president John F Kennedy, died at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, aged 88, surrounded by her family.
She championed the rights of those with intellectual disabilities, founding the Special Olympics in 1968 in the United States.
The games grew to include 190 countries and in 2003 they were hosted by Ireland, the first time the world games were held outside the US.
The book will afterwards be sent to the US embassy, which will forward it to the Kennedy family in the US.
