A Dublin man has been jailed for three years after he admitted having explosives at his home earlier this year.
Robert Humphries (44), a labourer and father of two, of Elmdale Crescent, Ballyfermot pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court to the unlawful possession of explosives substances, namely a detonator, two time delay units, and two coils of electrical wire for detonating commercial explosives at his home on March 14th this year.
Detective Superintendent Diarmuid O'Suillivan, of the Special Detective Unit, told the court that detectives carried out a search at Humphries's home.
They removed a wardrobe in Humphries bedroom and found a sock which contained an electrical detonator. In another sock they found two timer delay units and in a box they discovered two coils of electrical wire for detonating commercial explosives.
Humphries initially denied knowledge of the items but later accepted responsibility for them.
A ballistics expert who examined the items concluded that the detonator was of a type used to detonate improvised explosive devices, that the timer units could be used in incendiary devices and that the electrical wire was used to conduct a current to detonate explosives.
The court sentenced Humphries to three years imprisonment but suspended the final year of the sentence on condition that he be of good behaviour and keep the peace for five years.
