A 56-year-old man died just before midnight last night after being shot on the doorstep of his home in the Greenmount area of west Dublin.
Gardaí at Ronanstown and Lucan were last night investigating the l attack on Mr Maurice Ward, who lived with his wife and family at Greenmount Avenue, Neilstown.
A Garda spokesman said Mr Ward was shot in the leg and stomach just before 11 p.m.. The weapon used was a shotgun. "At around 10.45 p.m. two men drew up in a car outside the Ward home," the spokesman said. "It's thought that one man sat in the car while the other knocked on the door."
The Garda believe this man was carrying a shotgun with which he opened fire.
Mr Ward was taken to Tallaght General Hospital and died there soon after he arrived, just before midnight.
A Mitsubishi station wagon - believed to have been the getaway car - was later found abandoned.
Mr Ward was well-known to the Garda, the spokesman confirmed, and had a number of convictions
