Dublin refuse collections to resume

REFUSE collections will resume on Monday in south Dublin but it could be two weeks before the backlog is fully cleared

REFUSE collections will resume on Monday in south Dublin but it could be two weeks before the backlog is fully cleared. The loo refuse collectors, who have been on strike for the past four weeks, voted to return to work yesterday.

They agreed to accept settlement terms proposed by an independent chairman, Mr Stephen Treacy. They also agreed to begin work yesterday on clearing tonnes of rubbish outside the Friarstown tiphead.

The refuse collectors have agreed to work new, longer routes introduced by South Dublin County Council before Christmas. The council has agreed to pay overtime where required. The two sides are to meet again shortly to negotiate an agreement for the introduction of a wheelie bin scheme.
