Five months after leaving her family’s north Dublin apartment, the toddler twin who has been successfully treated for a rare medical condition in the US was discharged from hospital last night.
Elie Madden was given her medication at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, and returned home with both her new voice and an ability to eat food, after seven operations at the Children’s Hospital Boston.
The toddler has been diagnosed with a rare digestive disorder at birth known as severe posterior tracheomalacia and long-gap oesophageal atresia. The specialist medical treatment, estimated at €500,000, was supported by the Health Service Executive and VHI, with family friends fundraising to help with the cost of the extended stay in Boston.
Elie and family, including her twin Emie, mother Esti, father Eddie and grandmother Anita, arrived back in Ireland with the Air Corps last Tuesday, when she was taken to Crumlin for monitoring.
