Theinister for the Environment and Local Government last night criticised the low level of participation by Dublin villages in the Tidy Towns competition. Mr Dempsey was naming Malahide the tidiest village in the Dublin region.

"I urge Dublin Corporation to become more directly involved in promoting and driving the tidy towns effort in Dublin and in establishing and assisting committees."

Malahide was also named winner in the Co Dublin awards and was awarded the bronze medal in the national awards.

Skerries was the national silver medal winner, and highly commended in the Co Dublin awards. Stepaside was commended in the Co Dublin awards, and Ballyfermot won the SuperValu endeavour award.

In the national awards, Raheny won the highly commended award in the best urban village category, while Terenure won the best new entry award.

Sandymount Green, Sandymount, won the landscape award, while Art House, Curve Street, Temple Bar, won the best shopfront award.
