Efforts were being made last night to refloat a Dutch container vessel which ran aground on the Codling Bank, east of Greystones, Co Wicklow, early yesterday.

The vessel with a crew of nine was en route from Portugal to Dublin when the incident occurred.

The D·n Laoghaire lifeboat Anna Livia was called to the assistance of the Banjaard at 7.30 a.m.

The lifeboat arrived within 40 minutes of launching, and a tow line was passed to the grounded vessel.

However, as the tide was ebbing the vessel remained aground and the lifeboat was recalled to its station at about 9.30 a.m.

A spokesman for the Irish Coastguard last night said two of its members had joined the crew and renewed attempts were being made to refloat the vessel at high tide.
