Two separate earthquakes have taken place in Japan and Cuba, it was reported today.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 hit northeast Japan, shaking buildings in Tokyo, although there is no threat of a tsunami.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage following the quake.

Elsewhere, a magnitude 6 earthquake hit in the Caribbean Sea off the southern coast of Cuba  the US Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of damage.

A scientist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said the quake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami.

The USGS said the quake was centered 108km southwest of the Cuban town of Campechuela at a depth of 10 km. The epicentre is about 110km from the northern coast of Jamaica.
