Second-quarter profits more than tripled at eBay, and the US-based online auctions group says business will be even better than expected for the rest of the year.

In the three months to June 30th, eBay earned $24.6 million on revenue of $180.9 million. In the same quarter a year ago, it earned $7.5 million on revenue of $98.2 million (£68.8 million).

In a statement, chief executive and president Ms Meg Whitman said: "It's clear that our business has excellent momentum. We're seeing sustained growth across categories, trading formats and in our international operations."

Counting users brought on with the acquisition of European auction site iBazar, eBay added over 4.4 million users in the second quarter. It has more than 34.1 million users, more than double its total this time last year.
