Freetown - Thirty-seven rebels were killed in fighting between rebels and the west African intervention force ECOMOG in northern Sierra Leone, travellers who arrived here yesterday said.

The rebels were killed in an ECOMOG counter-attack in the town of Kambia five days ago, the witnesses said.

The Tribal authority, Mr Pa Alimmay Loko, who was among the travellers, said: "We were terribly shaken when the battle was going on. ECOMOG had initially warned all of us to stay indoors in the event of our hearing heavy bombardment or rocket fire in the township." He said the fighting lasted about five hours.
