Prisoners in Ecuador have nailed themselves to wooden crosses in a protest of what they called poor prison conditions and excessively long terms.
Guards stayed clear of the protest areas for fear the demonstrations could have turned more violent.
The demonstrations took place in prisons throughout the mostly Catholic Andean country, in a co-ordinated call for reform of overcrowded jails.
“Today there have been crucifixions. Tomorrow there will be something worse,” one prisoner involved in the demonstrations told journalists.
