Chelsea Clinton met fellow students and tutors as she took up her place at University College, Oxford University, one week before yesterday's official start of the academic year.

The history graduate from Stanford University in California is taking a two-year course for a master's in international relations and said she was looking forward to "everything".

Her father Bill, who attended the same college as a Rhodes Scholar in 1968-1970, helped her move into her new home.

A spokesman for the Clintons said: "Miss Clinton has indicated that she hopes to lead a normal student life, both in terms of her studies and her social life." The Master of University College, Lord Butler of Brockwell, said: "I am delighted that Chelsea Clinton is studying at University College.

"Her record at Stanford shows that she is a very well-qualified and able student. The college is also pleased to extend its link with the Clinton family." A spokesman for Oxford University said Chelsea's application was considered in the normal way. She did not apply through the Rhodes Scholarship scheme.
