Campus accommodation is an ideal way to start off in college and provides a great way of meeting other students.

College accommodation officers, local newspapers, notice boards in local shops and word of mouth provide the best sources of information on accommodation.

Don't make any hasty decisions about renting a particular flat and don't go alone to view a property.

Make out a checklist for inspecting properties. Things to look out for include dampness, heating, the type and variety of furniture provided, the availability of hot and cold water and appliances which work. Test the windows to see if they open and check out the neighbourhood to make sure you feel comfortable there.

If you're renting a flat or house, insist on a rent book in which all payments must be recorded.

Remember that once you become a tenant, your landlord is only allowed to enter the property with your permission.

Read through the lease and make sure you understand and agree with the contents before you sign anything.

Choose your flatmates carefully and don't share with anyone you don't like.

Check that you want to live similar lifestyles and that you have similar tastes. If you like early nights, you'd be mad to share with someone who plays loud music till dawn.

Set out the ground rules before you embark on communal living. Who is responsible for what and when? Do you have a kitty and share all food and cooking or do you all provide your own?

Remember you have neighbours - respect their rights to peace and quiet.
