By popular demand, Colaiste Dhulaigh in Coolock, Dublin, is again running its community media course under the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme for unemployed adults who want to return to full-time education. The course provides training in photography, video and radio production, media analysis, writing and desk-top publishing.

In the practical photography section, students take, print and develop their own pictures. The video and radio section gives hands-on experience in video and radio production, with students recording and editing their own programmes. Students also study creative writing, sociology, politics, community development, computers and media analysis.

There are 20 places on this yearlong course, which is open to people over 21 years who have been unemployed for six months or more. All participants receive payments equal to social welfare benefits, travel and meal allowances, free books and materials and are exempt from course fees. You don't have to have any particular educational qualification to apply.

Some places are available for people on lone parent's or disability allowances, and dependent spouses of people eligible for these benefits. But don't delay too long: places are available only until September 26th. The course begins on September 29th.
