Teen mums are being discriminated against by teachers and school counsellors according to a recent report from the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU). Spokesperson Donna Lieberman explained that the organisation had carried out an informal survey after receiving complaints from students, social workers, teachers and guidance counsellors. Schools designated for pregnant and parenting students are generally weaker academically than mainstream schools, she says. "It's illegal to segregate students just because they're pregnant or have a baby." Pamela McDonald, spokesperson for the New York board of education, declined to comment. Figures indicating the number of pregnant schoolgirls and teenage parents were not available when requested by NYCLU. The NYCLU carried out their survey by asking interns to pose as pregnant students phoning to enrol in non-specialised schools. In the majority of cases administrators and staff members advised the callers to go to a school which was specifically aimed at pregnant students.
