Reasons to be cheerful, one, two, three

The students of NUI Galway seem to be on a roll this month

The students of NUI Galway seem to be on a roll this month. On Monday, just as they were preparing to go to Dublin for a protest outside the Dail, their nursing students learned from the Minister for Health that their grant was to be increased by £500 per annum.

Next Sunday, the king-pin of Irish university rag weeks begins in the town with a ceili. Thousands of students from around the country are expected in Galway for the week's festivities.

Yesterday, the university's Challenging Times quiz team gave the Galwegian students another reason to celebrate when they defeated the representatives of St Patrick's College of Education, Drumcondra, by the slim margin of 20 points.

The NUI Galway trio will now face NUI Dublin (still far better known as University College Dublin) in the quarter-finals.
