Junior Cert IrishReaction to yesterday's second Junior Cert Irish higher-level exam was generally positive, with teachers praising the paper's layout and content.

It focused on literature, poetry, comprehension and letter-writing and included a number of short articles on subjects such as musician Amy Studt and the use of text messaging.

"They put a bit of thought into it," said Mr Robbie Cronin, ASTI subject representative. "There were no problems with it. You will get people with really good Irish complaining about how easy the letters were, but if you give an easy choice, people will be able to express themselves well."

"Everybody is very happy," agreed Ms Yvonne O'Toole, skoool.ie expert and a teacher at Holy Faith Convent, Clontarf.

Ms Máire Ní Laoire, president of the Association for Teachers of Irish, said that, while most students were happy, some of the images on the paper were not of the same quality as those in the English exam.
