Shane O'Meara is interested in a career in the civil service - 'specifically in planning' - and, as a result, is holding out for a place on the government and public policy course at Univerity College, Cork
Shane O'Meara expected the course in government and public policy in UCC to hold steady at 420, and was delighted with his points score of 425.
Unfortunately, he's been pipped by five points and is awaiting today's second round offer with a certain amount of mixed feelings.
"I am interested in a career in the civil service, specifically in planning," he explains. "This course would be ideal."
His second choice is social sciences in University College Cork, which he has been offered and has accepted.
It will set him on a different career path from his first choice of planning and local government, but Shane O'Meara maintains he will be happy with either outcome.
"I know it sounds pathetic, but I really would like to work in an area where I can make a difference. Whether that's in social work or in the civil service remains to be seen.
"I'm interested in the government and public policy programme for a number of reasons.
"The course examines how the constitution developed and how government works and that really fascinates me.
"I have a friend in first year who is really enjoying the course.
"Thirdly, I have an interest in planning and this course could take me in that direction."
Shane O'Meara's interest in planning matters springs from his experience of growing up in rural Cork.
He listened to the constant complaints of locals about the way poor development was diminishing the landscape and felt that study in this area could lead to a very useful and rewarding career.
"I feel strongly about how bad planning decisions are degrading the landscape and I would like to be in a position to affect change.
"I'm not fond of linear development. I think it is destroying the countryside."
That said, Shane O'Meara also feels that he could make his contribution as a social worker, and will not be downhearted if today's second round holds nothing new for him in the choices and decisions that he now has to make.
"I have accepted the offer of the place on the social science degree course at University College, Cork and I'll be perfectly happy with that course of study if that's what's in store for me."
