Eight killed in road accidents over weekend

Gerry Delaney (48) died when his vehicle crashed at Ballyhooleen, Ballinhassig, Co Cork, shortly before 2 a.m. He was pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital.

In Co Monaghan, Seamus Walsh (36) from Castleblayney and Teresa Murray (49) from Carrickmacross were killed in a car crash on the N2 at Drumquill near Castleblaney at around 5.30 p.m on Saturday. They were passengers in the car and died at the scene.

The woman driver was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with minor injuries. No other vehicle was involved, and gardaí have appealed for witnesses.

Also on Saturday, a truck driver was killed when the cab he was driving crashed into a ditch at Newtownforbes, Co Longford, at 4.30 a.m. He was named as Mr Gerard Casey (46), of Garrowhill, Drumlish, Co Longford.

In another single-vehicle crash, Brian Guidera (15), of McAuley Drive, Birr, Co Offaly, was killed when the van in which he was a passenger hit a tree at 11.30 p.m. on Friday night in Birr. Four other people were injured in the crash.

In the North a woman was killed in a car crash at Cloughmills, near Ballymoney, Co Antrim, at 2 a.m. yesterday.

Elsewhere, Mr Paul Harris (18), of Duneoin Road, Cullybackey, died when the car he was driving left Tullygrawley Road, Ballymena and hit a pole at 10.15 a.m. yesterday.

Motorcyclist Mr Neill McPhillips (23), of Kilmacross, Redhills, Co Cavan, died when his bike struck a telegraph pole at Roslea, Co Fermanagh, on Saturday.
