Bilbao - A Basque town councillor resigned yesterday in response to a violent campaign against Spain's ruling party by ETA separatists, becoming the first local Popular Party official to do so, authorities said.

Ms Concepcion Gironza, who had not attended council meetings in the industrial town of Renteria since the assassination of fellow PP councillor Mr Jose Luis Caso last December, quit two weeks after a bomb extensively damaged her home.
