The European Union's trade chief has made a new proposal to the United States to avert a showdown at the World Trade Organisation over subsisidies enjoyed by aircraft manufacturers, a spokeswoman said today.

European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson proposed a phased and balanced cut in support to Airbus and Boeing, spokeswoman Claude Veron-Reville said.

He is hoping for a response from US Trade Representative Robert Portman early this week, she said.
