The Naval Service has detained two EU vessels within the past 24 hours for alleged fisheries offences in Irish waters. A Belgian beam trawler, the Gudrun, was detained by the LE Deirdre 23 miles south-east of Carnsore Point and escorted into Rosslare, Co Wexford. It was apprehended for failing to notify the authorities of its intention to fish in Irish waters, and for other offences. Later yesterday, the LE Deirdre under the command of Lieut Cmmdr Pat Allen also detained a French-registered vessel nine miles south-east of Carnsore Point. The Alf was held for alleged under-recording of catch and other logbook offences. It was escorted into Dunmore East, Co Waterford, last night.
