A helicopter carrying two Spanish pilots of the EU peace force and two German officers crashed today in central Bosnia, but it was not clear if there were any casualties, officials said.

"A helicopter crashed around noon about 20 kilometres north of the town of Travnik," EUfor spokesman Kerry Corkett said.

Spain's defence ministry issued a statement saying the helicopter was carrying two Spanish pilots and two German officers. Their condition and the cause of the crash of the BO-105 helicopter were unknown, the ministry added.

A separate EUfor statement said the crash had been confirmed by a second helicopter that saw smoke in the vicinity. There was no other information as the area was mountainous, heavily forested and inaccessible.

"Emergency procedures are underway and we are not yet in a position to report on possible casualties," EUfor said.

The EU's 2,000-strong multinational force took over in 2005 from Nato, which had originally deployed at the end of the 1992-95 war. Spain is the biggest contributor to EUfor.
