Residents evacuated from their homes in Co Armagh were allowed return tonight after army bomb disposal experts located a mortar bomb fired at the local security base.

The RUC said the device was found lying unexploded in the yard of a local commercial premises in the village and was defused.

British Army technical experts earlier had evacuated 80 people and set off one controlled explosion at the scene of last night's suspected mortar bomb attack in Bessbrook, Co Armagh.

Twenty people were forced to leave their homes last night after an explosion was heard near a British army base in the area.

Police said what was described as a "loud bang" was reported to have been heard near the Bessbrook community centre, which is near the army base.

The North's First Minister, Mr David Trimble, and his deputy, Mr Seamus Mallon, condemned the attack in a joint statement.
