Evidence in rape trial ends

The evidence has concluded at the Central Criminal Court in the trial of a Co Offaly widower who denies raping his daughter

The evidence has concluded at the Central Criminal Court in the trial of a Co Offaly widower who denies raping his daughter. The jury will be addressed by Mr Justice Morns today before retiring to consider its verdict.

During the three day trial, the jury heard the now 18 year old woman alleged that her father raped her in 1991 and 1993 and also sexually assaulted her. She told Ms Maureen Clark SC that in 1991 she awoke from her sick bed to find her father raping her. She had been at home recovering from an appendix operation, the court heard.

The father (41), said his daughter was a liar, who appeared to have a grudge against him because he had disciplined and grounded her a number of times.
