Ex-president's son, Terry de Valera, dies

Terry de Valera, the youngest son of the former president and taoiseach, Eamon de Valera, has died at the age of 85.

Terry de Valera, the youngest son of the former president and taoiseach, Eamon de Valera, has died at the age of 85.

A former senior taxing master of the Supreme Court and the High Court, Mr de Valera was a fellow of the Royal Irish Academy of Music and was an internationally-recognised expert on Chopin and on the Irish composer John Field.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern paid tribute to Mr de Valera:

"Terry de Valera was a patriot in the proper definition of the word. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his family and many friends. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to them at this difficult time."

Mr de Valera is survived by his two daughters, Síle (a former government minister) and Jane, and by his sister, Mrs Emer Ó Cuív.
