A former soldier who stabbed his ex-girlfriend's lover in a drunken attack last July was jailed yesterday for two years. John Mark Williamson (23), of Barrington Gardens, Belfast, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and to possession of an offensive weapon.

Belfast Crown Court heard that Williamson, who had split up with his girlfriend, saw her with another man in a nightclub and later observed her returning to her home in Benview Park with the man.

Mr Peter McGill, prosecuting, said that Williamson armed himself with two large kitchen knives and kicked open the door of house before stabbing the man five times, puncturing his kidney.
