The Minister for Education has ordered an urgent inquiry into reports that a small group of students at Sligo Regional Technical College were told they had failed an examination before their papers had been corrected.

Mr Martin said he had asked the National Council for Educational Awards, which validates Sligo RTC's qualifications, to report to him on the first-year maths exam for electronic engineering students.

It is understood that the Department of Education is not fully convinced by the college's explanation that "outside experts" conducted a preliminary marking because the lecturer concerned was involved in an industrial dispute.
