An explosion at the house belonging to Iraq's main Shi'ite Muslim political group early today killed at least one person and injured seven, witnesses said.
A top official of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), which co-operates politically with Iraq's US occupiers, was assassinated in Baghdad on Wednesday by what the group called loyalists of ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
The witnesses said the explosion struck a residence at a compound of the SCIRI at about 2 a.m. Irish time.
A SCIRI official confirmed the explosion, but had no further details on the incident. One witness said the structure was blown up by a large explosive device. There was no immediate comment from the US military on the incident.
Other residents of the area said the building had been a headquarters of Saddam's Baath Party that was taken over after Saddam's fall by SCIRI's militia, the Badr Corps - but that families also lived there.
