The Garda is awaiting the extradition of a US citizen in relation to the killing of a young Galway city man just over a year ago.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Eamonn Barnes, has directed that the US citizen should be charged with the manslaughter of Malcolm O'Shaughnessy (22) in the early hours of August 1st of last year.

Gardai are declining to speculate on when the man may be brought to Ireland, although it is expected the extradition process from the US could be lengthy.

"We could not speculate on when he would be brought here, as extradition from the US to Ireland is not as straightforward as it would be from a European country, for example, said a senior Garda spokesman yesterday.

Mr O'Shaughnessy, from Inni shannagh Park, Galway, was in the company of five other people when they left the GPO night club on Eglinton Street. The group walked towards Dominick Street, where they were involved in two altercations with two non-nationals.

The third and fatal row occurred at William Street West when one of the men lunged at Mr O'Shaughnessy with a knife.

It is believed that two men, who were staying in a nearby hostel, fled the scene and left the State shortly afterwards, but gardai eventually traced them to California.

Two senior gardai travelled to California last October to interview one of them, who is believed to be the man whose extradition is being sought.
