F1:  The Formula One calendar will be trimmed to 17 races after Italy and Germany each lost a race on the 2007 schedule.

In a short statement, the FIA revealed the 2007 season will begin in Australia on March 18th and feature 17 races.

The European and San Marino Grands Prix were eliminated from the schedule, although only nations rather than circuits were listed.

Monza is certain to retain the Italian race, leaving Imola on the scrap heap but the venue for the German Grand Prix is yet to be confirmed.

Hockenheim and the Nurburgring are keen to alternate hosting rights but today's FIA statement did not specify which track would host the 2007 race.

The British round returns with a July 8th date while Belgium is back on the calendar following a one-year break for improvements to the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Japanese hopes of hosting two races appear to have been dashed.

The Japanese race will switch to the Toyota-owned Fuji Speedway next year but Suzuka had hoped to run a race under the Pacific Grand Prix banner.

Three fly-away races will again mark the end of the campaign, in China, Japan and Brazil respectively.  PA
