Fairground confessions behind a magic lantern

In the dark, confession-box space created by Stan's Cafe we step into a fairground booth to gaze at a magic lantern. Behind the small screen, actors are suddenly illuminated - in close-up, long shot, in cityscapes, in tiny rooms - evoking the world of silent film and the light-bulb flashes of early photography.

A "live film" is enacted, playing tricks on the eye and the imagination. Leaning forward to look around the edges of the frame, your own outline looms: the viewer viewed. "How is it done?" is the recurring question in the comment book. Inevitably, over three minutes, this is the viewer's preoccupation; to appreciate the form and its narrative possibilities fully, we would need much, much longer. More please.
