A brother of the man shot dead by Mayo farmer Pádraig Nally claimed yesterday it was impossible for a Traveller to get a fair trial in Ireland.

Jimmy Ward said his brother John "Frog" Ward had had alcohol problems and had "pulled a slash-hook" on gardaí on one occasion.

But he claimed there was no evidence that his brother had set out to rob Mr Nally, on the occasion of his death in October 2004.

Mr Nally was cleared by a jury on Thursday of the manslaughter of John "Frog" Ward at his farm in Funshinaugh, Cross, Co Mayo.

Jimmy Ward, who lives in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, said "every Traveller in Ireland" was upset about his brother's death.

He added that his family felt it had been denied justice and that Travellers could not get a fair trial.

"If I went to a farmer's house today and knocked on the front door and nobody answers, I go to the back door and a man comes out with a gun and shoots me in the backyard, he'll say tomorrow I was there to rob the house and he'll get off," he claimed.
