Restrictions on the farm-to-farm movement of cattle are to be lifted from next Monday.
The Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Mr Joe Walsh TD, said today the resumption of cattle movement would be allowed but only under strict permit.
The decision to ease the restrictions was made in consultation with the Department's Expert Advisory Group.
Mr Walsh said he was conscious of the need to balance the continuing threat of foot-and-mouth disease with the pressures in the farming community over the need to move cattle.
He said it was important to emphasise foot-and-mouth is still a very serious threat and will remain so. He also emphasised the continuing need for a "very high level of vigilance".
The requirement for a veterinary examination of cattle immediately prior to movement will no longer apply. "Taking account of the logistical realities and in the expectation that farmers will respect and adhere to the protocol, I believe we can proceed without the need for such a requirement," the Minister said.
Relevant forms needed for farm-to-farm movements are to be made available from DVOs, Teagasc Offices and South Western Services in Bandon. The permit system is, in effect, an extension of the CMMS system and SWS would therefore play a key role in its operation.
A telephone helpline (023-29190) will operate from Monday next to assist farmers in availing of the new arrangements.
