New Delhi - India's Congress party said yesterday it had kill Sonia urged the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, to strengthen security for Mrs Sonia Gandhi as the party saw a threat to her life.

It said in a letter to President K.R. Narayanan that a "fascist clique" was behind a plot to kill Mrs Gandhi, the Italian-born head of India's best-known political dynasty whose mother-inlaw and husband were both killed by political assassins.

A senior Congress party member, Mr Arjun Singh, told a news conference that party leaders met Mr Vajpayee on Saturday and told him about the threat to the life of Mrs Gandhi, who stepped down as party leader last week.
